From strangers to friends (part 3)
He was over the moon on hearing that he was my crush. We
started stealing glances secretly and being anywhere near him gave me
butterflies. Even though we planned to have lunch together like other campus
couples, his friends never left him alone!
And like that, we did not even get a chance to talk in
person. Still, I was on cloud nine whenever we talked over the phone. One day,
I was taking a walk and messaging him that I was stressed. Strangely, I felt he
was being evasive and indifferent about my worries.
When I pried him on what bothered him, he admitted having a
liking for a girl since he was young. At first, I was perturbed that he brought
this up. But still, I tried to understand his feelings for the girl, which were
never reciprocated.
Although I was feeling crushed inside, I thanked him for
letting me know his heart. Days went by and my college life felt like a
rollercoaster ride. This was the story that I shared with everyone on the trip.
But, there was more to it..
Years later, he messaged me saying he wanted to get back
together. I immediately thought of all the things we could have done together
during our college days! I thought his words would make me happy. But I had already
lost any trust and affection I had for him...
Someone in the group asked me whether I was alright after
telling my story. I smiled and said, "I'm okay". The short-lived
romance which made me cry whenever I heard sad songs playing, now felt like a dream. It just became another chapter in my life, that I could reiterate
without any resentment.
As we retired for the night, I wore snuggly clothes and
slept like a baby. The next morning dawned gracefully as we lowered the blinds
and soaked in the daylight. It felt surreal waking up in the midst of nowhere
surrounded only by water and soothing views.
